"My best Christmas treat."

"Bought for my father who is a huge fan."

Eiswein, (Ice Wine), is rarity and a speciality. The grapes that produce this exceptional wine must be harvested at temperatures of -7°C or below. Such frosty conditions freeze the water content of the grape. This water remains in the wine press whilst the juice drips into vats, giving this wine its dense concentration of sweet grape extract. With such high sugar levels, it is difficult for the yeast to process the juice into wine. Eiswein, as a result, tends to have a very high natural sugar content that usually exceeds 100 grams per litre, yet it has low alcohol levels of around 7% volume - unlike sweet wines from warmer countries. Despite its large amount of residual sugar, Eiswein has a refreshing acidity.

Made in middle Mosel by the Rauen family, this is made from Riesling grapes grown on 50 year old vines. Grapes are hand picked in mid-October and gently crushed before maceration in their skins.

Clear aromas of peach with a fine, clean, mineral palate and a refreshing finish. A perfect example of an Eiswein.

About the vineyard

Harald and Maria Rauen took over this 4th generation estate of 13 hectares in Middle Mosel in 1990. The 50-year-old vines grow on the steep slopes of Middle Mosel and rival the best in the area for their delicacy, minerality and wonderful wildflower flavours. Their Eiswein is one of the best in the region. Read How it's made for more info above.
