This award-winning wine from rising star, José da Mato Capitao is an absolute joy to drink. With 93 Points in Decanter, it is a very special wine that we are delighted to represent. Made from the extremely rare Galego Dourado which is almost extinct worldwide. Currently this is the only wine made almost entirely from this Grape.
In the glass
Clear, lemon yellow colour with golden reflections. Aromatic, elegant nose with plenty of fresh lemon, green apple and tangerine - typical of the Sercial grape variety. Hints of chamomile and wildflowers add a touch of softness while the Galego Dourado adds a subtle layer of stone fruit and a touch of minerality, while adding volume and elegance to the palate. Long, saline finish with pronounced citrus and minerality. Galego Dourado is practically extinct and currently this is the only wine made almost entirely from this Grape.
The vineyard is surrounded by trees and vines, laid out in a north-south orientation atop a south facing hill, 60m above the Sado River. Warm days and cool nights provide perfect growing conditions, along with the special mix of clay loam, calcium and silica in the soil and an ideal PH balance. Grapes are hand harvested, soft pressed and undergo cold decantation of the must before fermentation in French oak barrels. The wine is further aged for 12 months in 300L French oak barrels with gentle battonage.
