Grower José da Mato Capitao is a rising star of the Portuguese wine scene, using innovation to bring back virtually extinct grape varieties in his uniquely situated River Sado vineyards. Garnering attention from the critics for his fresh, joyous wines, these are wines to watch.

In the glass

Pale golden yellow with greenish glints, clear and bright. Intense, elegant nose with plenty of ripe peach and pear, with citrus notes. The unusual grape varieties also provide delicate floral and soft herbaceous nuance to the wine, combined with good minerality. Pair with shellfish, sushi, fish or fresh, soft cheeses.

Made in São Romão, the vineyard is surrounded by trees, and the vines are laid out in a North South orientation, atop a south-facing hill, 60 metres above the River Sado. Warm days and cool nights promote both fruit and freshness in the grapes. The soils here have high levels of calcium and a perfect PH balance which provide structure and flavour to the grapes. Grapes are hand harvested, and selected a second time before fermentation in 5000L French Oak Vats before being aged for a further 12 months in Stainless Steel Tanks with light batonnage.
