About the Book

The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim follows four women who, weary of their dreary lives in England, rent a castle in Italy for a month. Amidst blooming wisteria and Mediterranean breezes, they rediscover joy, friendship, and themselves.

This is a comfort read, a book that never fails to transport me to a world of gentle humour, shrewd observations and the feel of the warm Italian sun on my skin.

Wine Pairing:

We chose the Gavi San Pietro to pair with this book for several reasons, not least because it is made very close to Liguria, where much of the book takes place, and may well have been one of the bottles consumed during the course of the book. Made from the Cortese grape, it's a variety that perfectly captures the light floral, citrus aromas of Northern Italy, but is underpinned by a pleasing minerality that reminds us of the undercurrents experienced by the women (and men) who appear in the story. Wine plays a key role in the book and is the source of both tension and amusement, as well as acting as a catalyst for some of the characters to let down their guard and free themselves from the constraints of middle and upper class Britain in the 1920s.
